They Robbed the Bus — Then Left Her to Die (Greatness Olorunfemi)
The program
In September 2023, the death of Greatness Olorunfemi sparked outrage across Nigeria.
After armed robbers attacked a commercial bus in Abuja, the young woman was critically injured and reportedly taken from hospital to hospital while urgent treatment was delayed. By the time help finally came, it was too late.
Her story quickly became more than a robbery case. It raised difficult questions about emergency healthcare, hospital policies, public safety, and how a young woman fighting for her life could be failed so many times in one night.
This episode breaks down the Greatness Olorunfemi case, the Abuja bus robbery, the timeline of her final hours, and the national conversation that followed after Nigerians demanded answers and accountability.

She gets in the bus and hoping to perhaps commute home or go somewhere, we don't know. As she gets into the bus, she realizes that there are three other men in the bus.
So there's a driver, there's a conductor, and there are two other passengers. Now, conductors are perhaps a bus worker who is working with the driver, and usually the conductor's job is to load up the bus with passengers and to make sure that the driver drops them off at their designated stops as people are getting off the bus. His job is to load more people into the bus or to, you know, make more people join their trip. His job is also to take the transport fare, the payments from the passengers, and if they need balance or change for their money, we give them the change.
And that's pretty much the job of the conductor. Sometimes it could be one of the persons in the bus who takes the money from everyone for the driver, or it could. Be someone who knows the driver and works with the driver and he works with the driver. All. Day and split the profit together so she gets into a bus and she realizes OK there's a conductor here it's a driver that's driving the bus There's a passenger to her left and there's another one behind her Nothing about the situation is unusual or unlikely so she gets in at first she realizes oh I'm the only female in this bus but just when she's starting to go suspicious the guy to her left says something along the lines of conductor my balance and she's like OK so they're all passengers just like me so these are the two passengers there's a conductor and the driver.
The guy reaches for the conductor and requests for his money. So the conductor fumbles with some cash, takes out some money and gives it to the guy to her left, the passenger to her left. And gives him the change. For his payment. And as he takes the money, he puts it in his pocket. And then he reaches his arm out again and she's just thinking what else does he want? But before she could even finish that thought, he puts her in a chokehold. The passenger to her left puts her in a chokehold and she's shocked what's going on.
She doesn't understand. She doesn't even have time to fully understand what's happening. They tell her to cooperate or they're going to kill her. And they set it in Nigerian in English. So it would go something like cooperate or I could kill you. You won't die. You won't die. You won't die tonight. So she said, they're saying to her, you won't die tonight, cooperate or you go die tonight. So basically cooperate or you're going to die tonight. Do you want to die tonight? She's shocked by anything.
She doesn't understand what's happening. So at this point, they had already taken her belongings from her. They took her purse, whatever it is, her phone, everything she had. She is fighting because it's. Naturally human instinct to fight back so she's fighting and they just keep yelling at her to relax and calm down when she's. Going to die. The guy that was in front of her, the one that was acting as conductor, punches her in the face right above the eye, breaks her skin. She starts bleeding profusely.
Blood is just like streaming down her face, into her mouth, everywhere. She's like, Oh my God, I am definitely going to die tonight. How do you escape this? How do you get breast kit from this? And you're just driving around around town? Most people won't even know what's happening because I just see a vehicle on the road. The road is barely like lit bright enough and perhaps the vehicle is not even bright. You can't see what's happening in there. So they tell her to lay on the floor and she's like what they tell her.
Lay on the. Floor, you know the floor of the bus and she's like Oh my God. So this was the motive, because at this moment she's thinking, oh, they. Want to rape me? This is the whole point of this. She lays on the floor of the bus, one of the guys. Lays on top of her and tells her I'm going to cut one of your breasts off. What do you respond to that? She just says OK, perhaps she's understanding there's a price I have to pay to stay alive. The guy that got on top of her starts to choke her out and she's fighting to stay alive because it's natural instinct to try to stay alive.
But he's joking her trying to make her pass out. At that moment he asked her do you have any kids? And she muttered yes, she does. And that's when the script flipped. Suddenly he's off of her and they tell her to get up. And at this point, she's already really been beaten. She's got bruises all over her neck. She's bleeding from her face. She's got bruises on her face. Scars. Bruises that you know will turn scars. OK, we're going to let you go. But they've threatened her not to say a word to anyone, and they threw her out of the bus.
And that's how she survived the incident. And this woman was a random woman on the streets of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, who was interviewed about her case with scammers of the One Chance scam.
And every Nigerian is aware of the first one chance and basically it means one chance. This is a scam that's very life threatening and it's also very frightening. It's not one that you can predict. You don't even know that you're about to be a victim until you're a victim. One chance is just one seat left. It's a scam run by by drivers and conductors of public transportation. So basically what they do is they scream out on the road at traffic's that their vehicle has one seat left, has one chance left, one opportunity, one seat.
And why this is an opportunity for scam for most criminals is because most of the cities, most of the big major cities in Nigeria is. Very populated. There's lots of businesses, lots of factories, lots of growth. Development if you live in a city like that, convenience is one way to deal with every other hustle and bustle of the city. And one of the best convenience for most people is owning a car because then you're able to commute to work, you're able to commute home, you can go grocery shopping and drive yourself home because transportation like public transport, you get exposed to people of all walk.
People who are pickpocketers, people who are. Nuisance, people who are thieves, people who are abusive, harassers and all types. So if you're able to afford that privacy in public, most people will work hard and save up for it. There is intense. Traffic, severe traffic. Sometimes you could be stuck in a traffic one traffic for four hours, six hours. Half a day. So what that also does to public? Transport is that it doesn't rotate the vehicle soon enough. If the traffic is intense that a vehicle is stuck in it for three to four hours, it means the drivers or this transportation, they only make one trip in three to four hours because they can't finish the trip, come back and repeat it again.
So they only succeed to do one trip in about 3 to 4 hours. So if a vehicle. Is full, but somewhere along the way one of the. Passengers gets down because they've reached their stop. Now that vehicle has one seat available because someone's gotten off the bus and now they start advertising that one seat. There's traffic. We're not going to be able to repeat this trip anytime soon. But luckily for you, one chance for one lucky person, one available seat, 1 golden seat. If someone was sitting on a bad seat on the bus and then someone gets off from a good seat, whoever was on the bad seat would just run to the good seat.
And now they're advertising the bad seat. But if you've been stuck in traffic, stuck out there for hours, scorching heat, or it's night and you're running late, you're getting scared. Even a bad seat is a lucky seat. And sometimes the scammers, they don't really need passengers, they just need one victim. So what they do is if there are a gang and there's no light inside, you can't really see that there are no people in the bus. And the gang members sit around the entrance and whoever's acting like the conductor would scream one chance and you can see people around the entrance.
So you assume there are people all over the bus. The people inside the bus, it's full, hence why anyone would sit by the entrance. So they will not even slow down for you. So you don't have the time to look in the bus and see it's empty. What they basically do is they they they spread apart and make sure that there's a clear entry into the bus for you. The driver will slow down but doesn't fully stop and they expect you to just jump into the bus as it's moving and they make sure you don't get out and you're trapped in it.
Other times they will pretend to be passengers. They'll sit, they would just spread around the bus and you would get in and they would act like they're all passengers, pretend everything is OK. And once they feel like they're in a in an area that's secluded enough, or once they are ready, they just get up, lock the door, corner you and they rob you. They could rape you. They could do whatever they want. Sometimes if you're lucky, they let you go. Other times, some people are not so lucky. Today's case is about greatness, a little Femi.
She was great, She was a Wonder Woman, she was a blessing to so many people in Nigeria and unfortunately she fell a victim to the One John scam. Her name was Greatness Alura Femi. She was an HR and consulting manager, She was a coach and mentor, a certified Master marriage and Relationship coach, a life coach and Aun trained expert in gender tools, gender concept and women's economic principles. She was an advocate for people living with special disabilities and she was also the founder and president of the Greatness Unleashed by Love Foundation, an NGO established in 2015 with focus on supporting the abused prisoners, orphans and the less privileged.
And she was also a member of the Young African Leaders Initiative and she was ambassador. She was also an author known for her two books 1 published in 2015 titled From Lemons to Lemonade, How to Use Your Paint to Unleash Your Greatness and also her second book titled Rescued by Love, Why I Cancelled My Marriage, which focused on her personal experience and resilience. She worked with a lot of people, she supported so many people who. Had no one to support or help them or even care for them. She made her life an inspiration.
She owned a YouTube channel, she owned social media platforms, she had live sessions, they had coaching sessions, she had Zoom meetings, Facebook life, YouTube life, Instagram life. And she was so open and social and would use her. Own life story to. To inspire others and to motivate and encourage others. And she she was not afraid to accept her mistakes, to expose her mistakes and learn from them publicly. She would go on interviews and talk shows and she had. Lots. Of people who were depending on her before the incident.
Let's take a minute to get to know her when she died. She was 33 in 2023. She was killed on September 26th, 2023. But prior to that, she lived a life that's inspiring and worth telling, a life that she wrote about in her second book, Rescued by Love, Why I Cancelled My marriage. And basically this book talks all about her wedding that was about to happen and she she cancelled it seven days to the wedding and she also had a life session when she talked about the whole incident. It tells you the core values that guided her life and the same values that she fought every day to teach to other women, to teach to the vulnerable and to help people.
So basically, she said that she had challenged herself. Basically, she had told herself, I have to get married by June 2019, turning 29 soon. And she said she told herself that she must be married by the time she's 29. And she set the date June herself. She has to be married by June. And she said she had a few reasons why she made that decision. At that point, she was very desperate. She really wanted a life partner. She said one of the reasons why she wanted a partner was because as philanthropist, volunteer, an HR and you know, someone, a life coach, a mentor, someone that works with people.
Many times they get volunteers, they get supporters, sponsors. Most of the times they're eligible young men and they join their 'cause they donated money to their cause and they work closely with them. Many a times they would hit on her, she would say I don't want to mix business with pleasure. You know, every single time she works with a male eligible bachelor who's supporting their 'cause it always ends that way and and and confessing love to her or proposing one or two. Relationships with her.
She felt like this wouldn't happen if I had a husband. Then they'll just feel on our cause and they would never hit on me because they know I'm already taken. So this made her start thinking about marriage a bit more seriously. If so, that made her start thinking perhaps I should get married soon. So people who come to support this cause of ours will be people who genuinely believe in what we do and wish to support us. Not people who are trying to impress me, who are trying to use this to grease their way into my heart.
That's one of her motive for wanting to get married. Her second motive was she wanted to be a minister of God. She was already a mentor, a coach, was always speaking publicly and sharing the word of God, her morals and values and supporting people. She wanted to become a minister of God who would also remind people of. God's love for them. She felt like people wouldn't take her seriously if she was a single. Woman who is trying to share the word of God with them. But perhaps that would take her a bit more seriously if she were to be a married minister of God.
To think I can't seduce her with the the pleasures of the. Flesh because she's a steadfast. Married woman, I don't really have a say in that. But yeah, perhaps humans are more susceptible to ministers of God who have partners and are more spiritual looking, or they seem more spiritual than single people who can be. Seduced. By the pleasures of life. So she said that was her second main reason for wanting to be married. So she told herself by June of 2019 she has to be married. And she started to to proclaim to herself it has to come to pass.
I want to be married by 2019. I want to be married by 2019. I want to be married by June. She literally self manifested everything she said to herself. She would say I don't want an abusive husband. I don't want a man with with a huge temper. I don't want this. I don't want that. I don't want this trait in my husband. But because in her heart that was what she knew. For instance, I don't want an abusive husband. She knew abuse growing up because her father was an abusive husband to her mother, allegedly.
So she said, perhaps in her heart she didn't really believe in what she was saying because she was attracting what she already knew too well, and she subconsciously through the universe attracting dead an abusive man. And she would. Whisper to herself. I want a doctor, I want a successful man who's going to love me and cherish me. And she manifested those things. It was on February 19th of 2019 and she just finished a school final exam and she's feeling good. So she thought I think I should take myself out.
So she had just made herself a short. We have different types of fabrics and one of the fabrics we have in Africa, especially Nigeria is called Ankara and it's a native cultural print. So she had one of those and she had made herself a short. She said it was really nice. So she decided to take herself out and. Put on the short and just treat herself. You're done with the exam life is about to get. Uppity up even more. You know you've put in the work, you've been working endlessly and diligently.
Go treat herself. You deserve it. So she dressed up nicely. She planned to go to a restaurant, treat herself to a nice meal, and then go to the cinema and treat herself to a nice movie. And that's what she did. She went to the restaurant, she had some meal, then she went to the cinema and bought tickets for movie and she started feeling pain in her stomach and she's like, Oh my God. What it says? Lord, you didn't tell me earlier today this was going to happen because she says she prays every day.
She speaks to God like a father, like he's right in front of her. Every morning she's going to pray to him. Lord, these are my concerns. These are my worries. These are the things I'm grateful for. Speaks to him like he's right in front of her. She was like, Lord, when I prayed to you this morning, you never said anything about pain. You didn't show any sign and you didn't say anything about me feeling any bodily pain today. What is this, Lord? Is this a sign? And she said she saw her movie. The pain would go away in return.
She saw the movie and she returned home. When she got home, she got a call from a friend. And she said this friend is kind of, you know, one of the spiritual friends that there's always somehow In Sync with you spiritually. The kind of friend that won't call you for months. You guys are not in touch for months and then suddenly out of the blue they'll call you. Hey, I just felt in my spirit you're not OK. What's wrong? I feel like you're going through something really intense. Umm, you have many problem.
I feel like you have many problem for this exact amount, but I sent you is the exact amount. I hope you're OK. He's gonna call her at the moment that she needs help the most. And whatever he senses is her problem is the exact problem she has in that moment. Sometimes he would call her and like, I feel like you're sad. What's wrong? And should tell him, Oh yeah, this and this and this has been happening and it's made me really sad, really depressed at the time he called her after not speaking for months.
Hey, I, I don't know how you're doing, but in my spirit that you need money, you have issues with money. So I sent you 40,000 naira. In that very moment that he called her rent was due and her rent was 40,000 naira. And out of the blue he calls her and like, I feel like you're having money problems. So I sent you 40,000 naira. I hope it helps. And it was the exact exact amount she needed for her friend, and she paid the rent with the money. So on this day, she comes home from the movies, she's at home and he calls her and he goes.
How you feeling? I have. I feel in my spirit that you're not feeling OK. You're sick. Are you all right? And she's like, yeah, I'm feeling pain in my stomach. And he was like, yeah, I should check it out. I feel in my spirit that it's something serious. She'd go to the hospital. So she was like, OK. Before she got home that day, she went to visit one of her friends. So after the movie, she went to visit a friend before coming home. And as she went to visit, the friend that has been married had two or three kids and her kids were so beautiful and they were like privileged kids, kids that, you know, the parents are doing well for themselves.
And she said the kids looked so pretty. They looked adorable. They looked like rich people kids and they were born in America. So she goes to visit. She's saying to her friend, Oh my God, I just want I want you living my dream. I want life just like yours. Not like she was jealous of a friend, but she was happy for the friend and acknowledged that the life the friend had was a kind of life any woman would want, including herself. It was like, I hope I have a life just as nice as yours, you know, a husband who loves me, a husband who cherishes me and gives me a good life just like you and I have beautiful kids like you.
I want to marry a doctor. A husband who loves me and pampers me and just dotes on me. And the friend was like a Amen, Amen, you will get it and more. She said she she felt very positive. And that was around the time she had already decided she must be married by June. So she was again speaking into her life. She wants to marry a Doctor Who loves her and cherishes her. So she leaves there at the end of the day and goes home. And that's when the male friend called her and was telling her that he thinks it's something serious.
She should go see a doctor. So she said OK. And the next day she, we booked an appointment and went to the hospital with her father to see the doctor. So she said she got there when she was at the hospital, they, they, they prepped her, She got the ultrasound, examined it told her we've got appendicitis. And she was like, what, how can this happen? How can this happen? Goldie didn't tell me that I was going to get sick like this. And they told her, well, you need surgery soon. The sooner we get this treated, the better.
So she said to them, OK, fine. If you think it's what's best, do it. So she was to go in for surgery in a few minutes and she got prepped and the doctor came and they're taking her to the OR and they're taking her to the OR. But on their way to the OR, the doctor looks at her and goes, I think you should get another ultrasound. I'm a feeling in my spirit that you don't need this surgery. You don't need it. I've never I felt this way before. Every single time I look at a patient's chart, I look at their results.
I'm confident with their treatment, but it's yours. I feel in my spirit that there's something wrong somewhere. You don't need this. Go get another ultrasound. And it's just like telling the doctor, no, just cut me open. Cut me however you want to cut me. Just cut me and get it treated. The doctor said no, you're still a young woman, you don't need surgery. Until we're certain, we're fully, 100% sure you need surgery, I'm not going to cut you open just because I can go get another ultrasound. So she says OK, and she goes back in, she gets another ultrasound done.
And the results came back that everything was OK, there was nothing wrong with her. And she's like, what's going on? What is this? What is this magic? What is the sorcery? What's this confusion? The doctor tells her I have a contact to the center, an organization. They provide healthcare, they can read your ultrasound a bit more in depth, perhaps look for a treatment or something. Maybe they can find underlining cause of your pain. You don't have appendicitis and you don't need surgery or any kind of treatments like that.
He passes on the contact to the organization and tells her to go there. She goes. He tells her go there and see a sonologist. She goes there with her dad. She says she waits at reception for about 20 minutes and nobody spoke to her, nobody asked her anything. She didn't fill in the form, nothing for a whole 20 minutes. And she was like what if I had life threatening situation? What is this? She is starting to be upset over the bad service. You know, the bad customer service, right on the wall beside her was a notice or a note that said kind of a sign, you know, that said if you're unhappy with our service, please call this number.
There's a number there. So she types in the number and she calls it in. One of the workers responded to the call and she tells the person, I've been here for over 20 minutes. No one's even acknowledged my presence, let alone ask me a single question. What is this treatment? So the person apologizes and she says I'm going to come right now and attend to you. So she comes out and asks her questions and she tells her I've been referred by this doctor to come here and I'm supposed to meet with so. And so the girl was like, Oh yeah, come with me, takes her.
They go towards an office and she tells her, yeah, this is the doctor's office so you can go in and meet him. So she steps into the office and the minute she walks in this is male doctor that's in the office and the minute he sees her he starts smiling. You know that that schoolboy infatuated smiled like you just saw the love of your life an Angel dropped from heaven sent from above kind of smile and she was like what is this? She said she looked behind her if there was someone else and she was disgusted.
Why is this man grinning at me like that? This is creepy. She walks and she knows 2 steps further and she said she explains to him, I've been referred here by this doctor. This is my ultrasound result. This is what's happened in the past few hours. Can you tell me what's happening because I have no idea what's happening. He doesn't. He doesn't do his job. Instead, he's still grinning at her sheepishly. So she goes, let me address this. What's your problem? Why grinning at me like that? And he goes well before coming to work today.
Oh, I pray to the Lord. I prayed to him and I told him, Lord, send me the woman that will become my wife. Let me meet the love of my life today. And I prayed to him, Send me the woman. The minute she steps into my life, give me the premonition to know she's the one. And the minute you walked into my office, I knew you were the one. That's why I'm smiling at you. You're going to be my wife. You're the one. She was again disgusted. She got upset and she stormed out of the office. She walked straight to her dad and was like, what on earth is this facility?
What are they doing? That was like trying to calm her down. What's wrong? And she said the level of unprofessionalism in this place. First, at the reception, they barely even addressed us. And then I go to see the doctor and he's telling me that the minute I walked in, I'm supposed to be his wife, that the minute he set his eyes on me, he knew I'm going to be his wife. What sort of unprofessionalism is this? And she was so upset. She was like, I'm leaving. Dad was like what he said, you will be his wife.
You have found your husband. Get back into that office and she's like, no, I'm not going in there. This is beyond unprofessional. What? What on earth is happening in this place? No, I'm not going back in that office. If I'm going to die from the sickness, so be it. But I'm not going in there. I'm going to find some other doctor. Father was like, you're 29, get married. We've been asking you for grandchildren. Where are the grandbabies? Go back in there and meet your husband. Well, she was raised to respect her parents and this was her dad telling her to get back in there and embrace her husband.
So she went back in there and suffered through the whole thing of him telling her how he prayed to the Lord to send him his wife. They exchanged their contact and she left. You know, he did his job eventually and she left eventually. She didn't get the surgery because it turned out she didn't need a surgery done. So that first doctor, you know, got sent perhaps. So she never mentioned about needing the surgery or going through with the surgery afterwards. But she leaves and the doctor, the synologist that she met at this other facility she was referred to started love bumming her, message her, call her, send her sweet text messages and all that.
And she was feeling like, Oh my God, this is what it feels like to be loved. He was really considerate of her, would put her forefront of his mind and all that and just love bum her. She admitted it felt good to be wanted by someone, to be on someone's mind. Three weeks after they've been together or, you know, three weeks of getting to know each other, her dad requests for her to visit him with the guy. So she visits her dad with the guy and when they arrived her dad, it was like this is the bride price, this is the dowry and since everything is supposed to pay to get married to my daughter and she's like what marriage?
After three weeks of getting to know each other, I met this man 3 weeks ago. It takes me even longer to get rid of a mole pimple on my face. Last longer on my face than three weeks. That's me personally. I have pimples on my face. I have acne on my face that's lasted more than three weeks. And here she was being asked to be married to this guy after three weeks of getting to know him. Barely knows the guy. Barely. This whole time he's been love bombing her. It feels amazing. But you really don't know him.
And she tells her that. Isn't it too soon? That's like, no, you're not a child. He's not a child. What do you need the time for? What do you? You will get to know each other in a marriage. You will know each other better in the marriage. That tells the guy, this is the diary you're going to pay, but by price, personally, you're going to pay 2 million naira. Now, in some culture, bride prices are being paid to the bride. Say the Middle Eastern, you buy gold, you buy gifts and you pay cash price. You buy a house and these are all dairy and bride price you pay.
But at the end of the day, everything is being given to the bride herself. She moves in with her husband, but she still has the house, the gold jewelry, the money that the groom paid, the groom and family paid as bride price or dowry. But it's kind of an insurance, you know, a rainy day savings. In case the marriage fails and they separate, the bride can leave the husband's home and move to the home he bought her as her dowry. And the money he gave and the gold he bought, she could use those as money to sustain her until she gets her life by contract.
So basically these things are paid to the bride. And then there's some Asian culture where the Grimm's family pays the Bryce family a certain amount of money that they both agree the Bryce family in turn hands over the money to both of their children. You know, the couple hands the money to both of them use this to buy a house or start a business or down payment for mortgage. But it's type it's kind of start your life starter pack. And there's some part of the culture in the world where the Bryce family pays the groom's family dowry to be married to the groom.
And there are also other parts of the world where dowry. What they don't do that. I love you, you love me. Great. Call the pastor, get married. That's it. There are no talks of dowry because it's not their culture. They don't do that in Nigeria. They do that. They dowry, put everything. The dowry money, the bride price money, everything goes to the bride's family. She doesn't get to share any of that. It's all given to the bride's family. Dad requests for 2 million naira as bride price. There's a list of other things are the requirements for the dairy.
The bride was shocked, so she took her dad aside and was like, Dad, isn't this too much 2 million naira for bride price? You might scare him away. And the the the dad was like, no, that's the price. Anyone who wants to marry you, that's the price they got to pay. Doctor agreed to it. Yeah, I'll pay, no problem. She was shocked. She was like, Oh my God, I'm really expensive. I'm really valued, you know, because it's any woman would feel that way. Of course I would be over the moon if my parents were asking for $1,000,000 and my, my, my groom was like, you know what, make it 5.
She's worth it. So of course she felt like I am precious. She was precious. But she said at the time she had low self esteem, so him accepting to pay that much for her, pay that much as her diary, her bright price, just like, Oh my God, I'm so valuable. She needed external validation to feel valuable. They agreed on the price and everything else and they leave. So the guy, the doctor and her, they get in the car and they start driving away. And as they're leaving, he's quiet the whole ride. So she's like, Oh my God, Oh my God, he's gonna leave me.
He's gonna leave me. He's been so quiet. My dad succeeded in ruining it after forcing me into being interested in. Now he just ruined it with his own hands, you know, all that type of stuff. And she's trying to make small talks, trying to be funny, you know, humor him, make him laugh, and he's just not having it. She's like, oh, OK, I'm just going to wait. I'm just going to give him time to sort through his emotions. She's definitely having thoughts in his head. So I'll give him space, you know, emotional and mentally to deal with it.
So I'm just going to be quiet the whole right. So she stays quiet in the right, and it can't be boring, especially if you have to ride through busy streets and in traffic. And it's not like it's a road trip. So eventually, she takes out her phone, and she's OK. I'm just going to watch a live stream or watch one or two, you know, interviews or educational stuff like that. So she starts watching it. And the next minute, he slams on the brake, heart sobbing kind that you're like, oh, my God, did someone just jump in our way?
Was there a child in the way? Did we almost ram into another car? Like your heart's beating and she looks there's no one on the road. She asks him what happened. We just slammed the brake that hard. And he was like, never you ever in your life ever, ever, ever again use your phone when you're in my car. And so she's thinking he slammed his brake this hard because I started to use my phone in the car. She could understand. So she tried to clarify. You slammed the brake because I used my phone in the car.
And he said said, yes, don't touch or use your phone when you're in my car. That was the first rule he ever gave her. She thought maybe he's edgy because, you know, he's mulling over the amount of money he has to depart from. Perhaps he's trying to act chill about it, like he's OK paying that amount but a bit too much for him and he's reconsidering. So he's like, sometimes it just get really angsty and angry over everything. If you're broke or you're about to be broke, you know, stuff like that.
So she's thinking, OK, perhaps she's just a little edgy because of the money. So she dismisses it. That was the first rule. The next thing she knew, she was given more sets of rules that she had over 20 rules, Rules that included you are not allowed to speak to anyone about me. You can't tell anyone my name or even show them my picture or mention me in any scenario. You're not allowed to post my picture on any of your platforms or even share your photos with me, and you're not allowed to post online about me or anything.
Don't talk to friends, don't talk to colleagues, don't talk to anyone about me at all, and you're not allowed to mention my name in church. Basically pretend you don't know me in public. Don't talk to anyone about ever knowing me. Don't use your phone when you're in my car. Don't talk back at me. Don't question me, don't question me about anything, and do everything I say when I say it. But she's still dismissed it all because she would excuses for him. And after that incident, she said he started to try to threw her off her sink.
So basically she's going to make her own plans for her day, plan everything. And then suddenly he's going to call her and message her and be like change of plan. I need you into the so so place at the so time. And it's going to be like an hour later or half an hour later. And she's like, what? I already made plans for that allotted time. And now you just tell him to scrap that and entertain you. So she'd say to herself, if he was already my husband, of course my plans would have to align with his own schedule because we have to support each other.
But you're not. So why you suddenly making me change my plans for you? Most of the times she would scrap her plans and entertain him because she wanted to be a submissive woman and a supportive wife to be. And on the 30th of March, she had a charity outreach registrations fill filled all the forms and taken all the steps they usually do to go meet the children and to donate and educate and all that typical things they do all the time. And they always end up meeting the kids and a day to remember kind of experience type of day.
But on that day she made plans. People had donated over 70,000 naira and they had prepared all the donations and education and everything to go. Just before she went, he messaged her, I need you in a few minutes. So cancel it. You're not going. It's just like what? No, we can't do that. I have worked hard for over 5 years to build this organization and to build the work I do. I've traveled to over 30 states out of 36. I have worked really hard to build what I have now and this is what we do. These people need me.
They're relying on me. They're hoping we come. People have donated and supported this cause for today and now you're telling me right before I I go for the outreach that I should cancel it. No, I'm not doing that. I'm your husband. Don't. Dare talk to me like that. I said counsel it. So counsel it just like, no, you're not my husband yet. You're the guy I'm about to get married to. You're not my husband. So she went anyway. And for the first time in years, over so many times of them doing outreach for the first time, they got there and the organization wouldn't let them see the kids.
They took their their donations, but they made excuses and they wouldn't let her see the kids. And she thought this was a The minute he asked me to cancel it, he must have jinxed it somehow. She still dismissed it because at the moment she couldn't see clearly. She said that he would do things like that all the time where he would just call her and change her old plans. And one of the times that actually made her start to see clearly was one day when it was on a Sunday. She had plans to do her own other things for that day.
And 6:30 in the morning, he calls her. He was a minister, you know, one of the ministers, not like the main minister, but one of the ministers at her church. And he called her. So he contacted her and was like, I want you to go to church with me today. I will be ministering today. And I want you there with me as my fiance, you know, just for more, to boost his standing as a man of God. You want me to join you by 7:00 and you're calling me 30 minutes prior? I told you, if you need me, tell me on time so I can plan my day around to accommodate you, to entertain whatever you need me for, not call me at the dire moment.
And I was like, why do you always have to argue with me? Why do you always have to challenge me? I said, get yourself ready. I'll be there in 30 minutes, OK, I'll do it. So she got ready. She had one of her friends colleague that they worked together. The girl was at her place at the time and she needed to commute somewhere as well. So the girl was like, since your man is coming to get you, can you give me a ride? You know, because I'm headed the same direction as you guys. And she was like, sure, sure.
Of course. So she called him and was like, can she join us? She's, you know, going the same way as us. Can you join us for the ride? And he was like, how dare you? Why do you do this? Why do you challenge me? I told you, I don't like crowd. I don't like crowd. I don't like third party. 3 is a crowd. And just like, oh, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, I asked. I apologize, sorry, I asked. So she again made excuses for him. He's an introvert. She thought. Perhaps 3 is indeed a crowd to him. She was an extrovert, a mentor, a coach.
She's she's used to crowd. She thought perhaps 3 is not a crowd to her. 100 is not a crowd to her, but perhaps 3 is a crowd to him. So she nicely told the girl whatever excuses she had to make. And the girl understood. And then suddenly he called, OK, fine, she can go with us. We're not going out of her way. If she's going the same way as us, she can go with us. And she was like, oh, thank you so much. Thank you so much. I'm so proud of you. Thank you so much. And he told the girl, yeah, you can ride along with us.
So they both get ready. They go over to the junction that he told them to wait for him. They get there right at the time he told them to be there because, again, you know, the screaming, the yelling and all that. So she made sure to be there right on the time and when she got there, called him and was like, hey, we're here. So we're at this place, exactly at this, at this exact place. So we'll see you in a few minutes. Yeah. And he was like, yeah, I just got out of bed. I'm going to quickly shower, get dressed, and I'll be there in 10 minutes.
And just like, OK, we'll wait for you. And she thought, well, let me just jokingly say this to him because, again, he's my fiance. He's supposed to be my best friend. And so she jokingly said, you know, if that was me making you wait extra 10 minutes, you would have been so mad at me. And he blew up. Why do you always challenge me? Why do you always question me? Why do you do this? Why do you feel, you know better? And just like, calm down, calm down. I didn't mean to instigate anything. I just thought I could joke with you, you know, as my best friend.
And I was like, no, I'm not your friend. I'm your husband. I'm not your friend, I'm your husband. So don't joke with me. So she was like, OK, sorry. And again, she was like, OK, she remembered her previous relationship where she was with a man who wasn't abusive. The man loved her to the point that she felt was something wrong with the love. He would cook for her. He would accommodate her. He would he saw things in her she didn't see in herself. She had four businesses running, always busy. And he'd tell her, you know, in your future, you're going to be a public figure.
You're going to be a coach, a mentor, public speaker and you're going to support people and inspire people. She said she'd laugh at him. Me. Why would anyone listen to me talk? Why would anyone even want to hear me speak? No, you're, you're imagining things. And he'd tell her, no, you're going to be great. You just annoyed. Yet he would buy her books. He would support her and he would always talk her up. He would talk her up. And she's like, where are you seeing this goodness in me? Why you seeing this greatness, 'cause I don't see it.
I don't feel it. And if she ran out of accommodation and money to afford her accommodation, at one point he housed her. And before they were living in the same home, you know, they weren't intimate or anything, but you know, physical closeness wasn't a taboo. But at some point she needed actual housing and he convinced her to come stay with him. Once she moved in there, physical touch became a taboo to to him because he wanted her to feel respected. He would never hold her hand or hug her or even try to kiss her, nothing because he wanted her to feel respected.
He would cook for her, clean, encourage her, boost her comfort, talk her up, and just made her see things in herself that she didn't even see at the time. And even at times when she would try to make other plans and when she tried to make big decisions, she would consult him. And if he told her, I don't think it's best for you, she would listen without arguing. She would listen because she knows this is one person that sees greatness in me that I am unable to see myself right now. This person has my best interest at heart.
So she remembered that moment. He was the perfect man any woman should ever have. And she said she left the relationship because she felt that kind of love was wrong, because she grew up in an abusive home to where she found herself in a love that was too good to be true. She couldn't believe it was true. And then here she is about to marry a man who's always telling her, you must listen to me. You must do what I say, You must stop challenging me. And she was wondering. My ex never had to do that.
He loved and respected me enough that I I chose to listen to him, I chose to respect him, I chose to never challenge him. And that was when she realized the kind of love she walked away from before and she was just OK again. Dismissed it during their ride. That was when the veil started to get off her eyes. Because eventually he shows up, picks them up and they start going on their way to the destination. On their ride, no one's talking to anyone. Nothing. No music. At least we were not talking to each other.
Play a music that you all can, you know, vibe 2 together, nothing. So she thought to herself, let me just, you know, again, fiddle with my phone, maybe watch a live stream or an interview or something. So she starts doing it. And then she was watching a church sermon or something. I think a church sermon. So she's watching it. He looked at her, you know, gave her that daggery kind of look. And she's thinking, OK, maybe the sound of the video is bothering him. So she puts on her ear box and starts listening.
And the next thing she knew, he slammed the brake really hard again dramatically. And she's like, wait, wait, what happened? And he yelled at her. I told you never, ever to use your phone in my car. What are you doing? Naturally, she got embarrassed because her friends at the back, this is the guy she's about to get married to and they've already started to share the wedding invite date has been set. And now a third part is saying that you're about to, they can already see you're about to marry an abusive man before you're even married.
So she said she's very embarrassed. She tries to coyly whisper to him, you can disrespect me in front of family, but you should never disrespect me in front of friends like any of us would do. Get your shit together. There's a friend right here. Behave yourself. Can do this in front of family, but don't do this in front of my friends. You know that's that's something any of us would do. I would do it. If you're not embarrassed, I'm embarrassed for you. Behave yourself. She's like, you can disrespect me in front of family, but don't disrespect me in front of my friend.
And later on she's like, perhaps she should have chosen her words better. But honestly I don't see what's wrong with those words. When she said that, he got even more upset and started riding maniacally around the town, speeding and all that. Now they're all scared. She's scared. And she said at that moment he's yelling at her, he's shouting, he's talking. She said once you yell at her, she's going to start crying. And that moment, my heart broke because that is so me. You yell at me and I'll cry.
Personally, Like I grew up in a neighborhood where parents don't really care about their kids. They just let you raise yourself. And if you grow up to be good, good for you. If you go to find yourself a criminal and you're locked up, that's good for you too. The parents barely discipline their children or punish them for anything. Mom was like, no, I'm not going to punish you if you'd misbehave. She was pro punishment, but she was against hitting a child or beating up your children. So she'd rarely hit me.
She would only threaten to hit me and she would shout at me and I get so terrified and I'd start crying. And even as a teenager, even as a teenager, if my mom shouted at me, I'd cry. I'd even cry myself to sleep sometimes. As a full blown teenager, she would never yell at me. Because there's the difference between yelling at someone and shouting at someone. According to definition, yelling is the act of shouting, often expressing intense emotions like anger, fear, pain, or excitement. Meanwhile, shouting is the act speaking or calling out with a very loud voice, often to express strong emotions like anger, excitement, or to grab attention over a distance.
So my mom used to shout at me a lot, barely yelled. She didn't even have the voice to yell so she barely yelled. Which is why even till today as an adult, if someone yells at me, whether it's a stranger or a friend, you yell at me anytime, any day, anywhere, there's a high chance I'm going to cry. And if family should yell at me or shout at me, I will definitely cry. So she said as he's yelling at her in the vehicle in front of her friend, the embarrassment, the fear, the, the, the whole emotions, she started, she started crying.
At some point she got tired of crying. So she lifted her head up and she just said, this is not the kind of man I wanted, You know, like she's saying to God, this is not the kind of man I wanted. And, you know, in hindsight, she said, perhaps it was, you know, hurtful to say that in front of him, but that hurt him even more. And he was driving around like he had a death wish. They're all afraid. Even the friend at the back is afraid. She's getting to her stop. And she manages to message her before getting out of the vehicle and was like, I think he has severe anger issues.
You should see a therapist before the wedding. And that kind of like, rang a bell in her head. What are you doing? This is not ideal for you. So as a girl got out, they continued with her trip. She's angry and he's trying to contain her and all that. She manages to speed dial her therapist. He's trying to contain her and they're kind of struggling in the car. I'm quite unsure if they were still actively driving at the time, but yes, there was an altercation where he's struggling with her I believe.
I'm not so sure. She manages to speed dial her therapist and she's telling the therapist. I'm tired of this. I can't do this anymore. I'm going to. I can't do this anymore. And he notices that she's actually speaking into the phone to someone. And he grabs the phone from her and tells the therapist, no, everything is OK, don't worry. It's just a slight altercation. It's a slight misunderstanding. Everything's fine. She's all right and hangs up. So at that point, she's like, no, this is not happening.
I am not marrying you until we go in for therapy. This can't keep happening. I will not marry you until we go for therapy. And he starts talking her down. He starts berating her. Who do you think you are? Always challenging me, always questioning me? Is it because you're a mentor? Is it because you're a coach? Because you have people who listen to whatever you have to say? Is that what's giving you the the morale? Is that what's giving you dacity? You are nothing. You are nothing. I'm a doctor. You are nobody.
So she's just like, how did I go from having someone who would tell me you are everything you can ever imagine, all you have to do is imagine to being with someone who's telling me I'm nothing. This despite all my work on myself. She stood her ground. Eventually he caved in, but he said before I go for therapy with you, you and I are going to go sign our wedding certificate, OK? Otherwise I'm not going to therapy. We have to legally be married. So they go to court, they sign the legal papers, the certificate, and they were married legally.
Now all that was left was the social ceremony and the party. They go for therapy, therapist talks them and everything. And eventually the therapist was like, you know what, fuck this. I'm going to tell you as it is, doctor, doctor, Sir, you're a terrible person. You don't need a wife. You need a slave. Ma'am, don't marry this guy. If you were my daughter, I would tell you not to marry this guy, period. This doctor didn't just choose to be unethical. It's because while they're trying to work through their their issues and the doctors asking them thought provoking questions more one of the questions he got pissed and he said, well, there's nothing you can do now.
You can't walk away from me ever because we're married now you're bound to me forever. There is nothing you can do. You can't walk away. And that's when doctor was like, what you guys are married? I thought you're yet to be married. And the girl said, oh, we've signed the papers. So that's when the doctor was like this level of abuse before marriage, what is going to happen in the marriage? He's already feel like he has full, full autonomy over over her just because it's time legal papers. The therapist decided to tell them that you're looking for a slave, you should walk away.
And the girl was like, boy, if I were to sign the papers, I'm already married to him. I don't think there's much that can be done. Have you guys consummated your marriage? She said no, we haven't. We have never been into much ever. And she said, good, that that nullifies the marriage. As long as we both have never consummated the marriage, then the marriage can be absolved. And honestly, I don't know how that works because some people could claim, yes, we have, we consummated the marriage. Imagine if she goes in there and says, no, we haven't been intimate yet.
And he goes, yes, we have. What will they do? Check her? And what if there's no signs? And he says, yeah, because it's been a week. It's been 2 weeks actually. It happened. How do you prove? I don't know. They told the court we haven't consumed the marriage. And it was a note. That's how the marriage was called off. She spoke up about it. She was ashamed of it. She put in the work, went to therapy and worked on herself and eventually was able to come out triumphant and to heal from the trauma and to also use her story to inspire others.
In 2023, she's put this behind her. She's written a book about and she's talking about her story, helping others find their voice, learn from her and all of that. And then on one evening she gets in a bus. No like much detail on the purpose of the trip, but honestly doesn't matter. She gets in the bus. That's the regular yellow bus that's used in most parts of the country like Lagos and Abuja because most of the public transportations, the paint color is yellow. So the tuk tuks and the taxis, public taxis and the buses are yellow.
The buses look reminiscent of a school bus. So she gets in a bus. There are two guys in the bus. There's a driver driving the car. There are two guys at the back. And there's a lady, a mature lady that looks like she's in her. 40s Who is at the back seat? So the lady got in before her and along the way greatness got in the bus as well. So obviously there's nothing that's going to make make her feel like something's about to happen because again, there's a mature motherly woman in the vehicle as well.
She gets in, she's just relaxed and ready to go on her journey when suddenly one of the guys gets up, locks the door, and the driver starts to roll up the window glass. And one of the guys, the one that's closing the door, takes out a long gun. The gun has a long barrel point set at greatness. And the other guy takes out a short gun and points it at the elderly woman's head. What do you do? They're panicking, they're scared, and they're asking them for their belongings and they're just handing it to them, asked for the purses.
They open it, look inside, they see their phones and everything. They take out their card. And usually they would have like a peerless card machine with them. So what they do is you'll take a card from you, they'll insert it into the card machine, request for a certain amount just like you're making payment, force you to give up your card PIN, insert the PIN and they'll transfer the money to themselves. So whatever amount you have in there, they would just wipe it clean. So that's what they did.
First they went through the older woman's purse, they saw her card, they took it out and they started robbing her Christmas for her PIN. And one of the other guys started to punch greatness and just beating her up. They asked the older woman for her PIN and, you know, taking money from her eventually the other one that's searching her purses like are you a police officer? Are you a police officer? Are you a police officer? And she realized, Oh my God, they found my work card because she she is a journalist and she writes lots of stories and most of the stories you have to verify with the police and all that and investigate and all that.
So she has card by the police that she can, you know, punch in tap to get access into the building, in certain parts of the building to do to her investigative research. So it's a police card, entry card, work card, whatever you want to call it. They saw them, they're like, oh, you're a police officer. They thought she works for the police. They decided they're just going to rob her and not kill her because that would make their crime event worse if they killed a police officer to robbing her. They took her money and then they head over to Greatness and they started requesting her car pin.
We're not sure what really happened, but eventually one of the guys came and sat in between Greatness and the other woman, and the other woman thought maybe she's sitting there so he can, you know, hit and abuse both of them at the same time. She had no idea he was there so he could shove her out of the car. Greatness is wearing a blouse and a skirt. The skirt is above me. It's decent dress, but it's a skirt. Now if someone should shove you out of a moving vehicle and your skirt is not a flowy skirt, it's the fitted skirt, it could mess.
With your balance compared to if you're wearing a short or a pent with free, you know, leg movement. So the guy starts shoving her out of the car and she's trying to at least gain her footing. So at least when she falls out of the car, she hasn't hurt herself too much. So she's holding on to the door and trying to balance herself. At this point they've beaten her up so much and she's just trying to balance herself first before she's shoved out of the car. Guy got upset and was like get get out of here, get out of here, get out up here and just keep starting to hit her with the door of the car.
Kept hitting and hitting and hitting until he shoved her out of the car. She falls, wrong footing, She's battered up again with the door of the bus previously already beaten up, wrong footing. She falls on the floor, doesn't move, unable to move, but she's still alive. They yell at her, get up, but she couldn't get up because I mean, so much damage been done to her at this point and they just drove off running over her. They ran over her and drove her and the other woman, she's like, Oh my God, I'm next, I'm next.
She just literally saw them bat her up and run over a young woman. So she's thinking I'm next. They take as much money as they could from her, drove her around, made a few turns and eventually opened the door and shoved her out and drove off. There are three people who have been arrested. They're suspected to be the people who did this to her. But again, no much public news about it. I watched a lot of videos with so many articles. I haven't really found much about a court case or anything, but I've found so many pieces of people being enraged.
What is happening. So right now I can't really give you a full detail as to what happened to those guys, but as to greatness, they ran her over, they drove off. Some kind people found her. They drove her to the hospital. It's a government hospital. When they got there, they tried to get her help, but nobody would help her and she died there without getting any medical help from the practitioners, allegedly. Imagine being there, you could get help, life saving measures, but no, nothing happens because they're quite questions like where's the police report?
Where's the incident report? Who's going to pay for this treatment? And she dies at the hospital. It's one thing if she died where this happened, but imagine being taken to the hospital and dying there because nobody's willing to save you. So there were lots of press releases and I watched a couple and one of the press releases that I watched was female government official who said something about the one chance scams. And she said that greatness died an unavoidable death. And honestly that stuck with me.
Unavoidable death, unavoidable death. Unavoidable death is driving on the highway and your tire bursts by accident and you fall off the bridge into the third middle in water and drown. OK, that's dark. That's really dark. Unavoidable death is perhaps earthquake. That's unavoidable death. Earthquake, The whole building crumbles. Unavoidable death is perhaps you have surgery and there were complications and the doctors couldn't save you, but they did their best. That is unavoidable death. What is not unavoidable death is taking a public transport like everyone else and some fuckwits decide to attack you, beat you up, run you over, but you still may get to the hospital alive.
And yet no health measures, no life saving measures, allegedly. That is not unavoidable. That is a death that could have been avoided. That is a life that could have been saved. And once I, I watched to the part of the unavoidable death, I was like, no, I can't do this. I just clicked away, clicked out. I cannot, I cannot, you can't tell me that was an unavoidable death. And then I went back to the video, you know, research purposes. Another person, another perhaps government worker spoke after her and gave a counts of the incidents that happened when she arrived at the hospital saying that the minute she arrived at the hospital within the 1st 5A casualty nurse came to her and was assessing her to help her and started administering help to her.
Within the first 3 minutes a casualty Dr. came to her and started to help her and within the 1st 5 minutes casualty the officer came to her and tried to help her. But the part that stuck with me was within the 1st 5 seconds a nurse came to her within the 1st 5 seconds that she got help. But everywhere everybody, everyone were posting that this lady was rejected from the hospital. They kept asking questions like where is your where is your police report? Who's going to pay for this treatment and all of that.
So how did she get help within the 1st 5 seconds? Anyways? So as of right now, I can't really find much information about what happened in terms of justice, but I am still looking more into it and keeping like my eyes out making sure that I gather more of the information because I cannot just leave you with no closure or answers as to what happened to these people. So this will be the Part 1 of this video and Part 2 might not come right after, but I will take my time, no matter how long it takes, I will make sure to get all the information and all the answers as to what happened to the people who did this to her.
So this is where I will leave you here. Let's not forget greatness because just like her name, she wasn't that great and she's a loss that the world will miss. She mentored people in South Africa, in Ghana, in Nigeria. So she wasn't just mentoring Nigerians. And this is a great loss that so many people will miss and feel. And she even worked with so many international organizations and these are the vulnerables who really needed her. And now those terrible people took her away from them. She's agenda the world will really, really miss.
And let's not forget her. Let's look into what happened to the people who did this to her. I would like to hear your thoughts and comments in the comment below. And if you have any information as to who the people who did this were or where I can find further information as to what happened to them, you can leave in the comment below. You can share it to me on her platforms at Mysteries Niger. So thank you so much for listening to today's episode and I really wish I could with all the answers that this episode raises.
I really wish I could provide you with all the answers to the questions that does this episode brings. But right now I would rather leave it at this than speculate or make up things myself. So once again, thank you so much for joining me on this one. It's been a really long 1 and I really had to talk about her life. And these are all information that she live streamed about, posted about because she wanted her life story to be an example and also an inspiration to others to walk away. It's never too late to walk away.
It's never too late to find your value and to know your worth. So I did not share those stories to defame her or anything, but to let you know that even someone who was so great and put her life out there to helping and serving others could sometimes fall victims. But it's never too late to reclaim your voice. And she proved it. And it's so bad that I cannot tell tell you about the people who took her away from us. I'm getting riled up. I'd like to know what you think about the case, your opinions, your comments, your thoughts.
And I'll see you in the next one. But until then, please stay safe, be careful, be your brother's keeper, and please live and let live. I repeat, live and let live, please. How hard is that? Just live your life and let others live their life. I love you for being good, or at least for trying. Stay in the next one. Bye.
