In the 1990s, Nigerian businessman and former Union Bank director Emmanuel Nwude convinced Nelson Sakaguchi, a director at Brazil's Banco Noroeste, that Abuja was getting a new airport. Nwude used a false identity and a completely fictitious project to orchestrate a fraud worth $242 million, making it one of the most notorious banking scams (419) in Nigerian history.
